Dracula’s Cellar Found?

In Pecs, Hungary archaeologists have discovered what they believe to be the cellar of Wallachian Duke Vlad III, otherwise known as Dracula.

kpacontentminepix032964-Vlad-Tepes-Tomas Fedeles, a tutor of medieval and early modern history at the University of Pecs, has been researching the surrounding area and his reports show that Vlad III or Vlad Dracula lived in a two-story house located today in the city’s central square. Fedeles also discovered a document detailing the house and its owners, where the name Drakulya appears.

Authorities have plans to fill the site and close the excavation because archaeologists have been unable to find further information to back up Fedeles’s findings. Bummer.

Transylvanian-born Vlad III Tepes was part of Bram Stoker ‘s inspiration for his novel Dracula. Stoker’s main character is partly based on European folklore, vampire stories and the cruel leader who killed 40,000 to 100,000 Europeans during his reign. He was notorious for impaling his victims. Romanians consider Vlad the Impaler a hero for driving off the invading Turks.
