Sometime last year I mentioned on Metal Martyr that Modern Rock Is Dead. To me it was. There was just a lack of bands that wanted to make good rock music. Sure there were train-loads of bands like Hinder, Saving Able and such that seem to be more in the lines of putting together songs and living the life of the rock star. That’s a big problem in every genre of music to include metal, but there are enough “Underground” acts to follow that you can filter out the wanna-be’s and poser fairly easily in metal. I’ve felt this way for years. I lost my faith in modern rock and pretty much wrote it off. With the exception of a handful of rock bands in the mainstream, I wasn’t willing to listen to modern bands. Ana from Austin Sound Check told me to “turn off the radio, word of mouth and blogs”. Since then there have been a few bands that have caught me by surprise.
Since I took over The Rock Dose there have been a few great independent rock bands thrown my way that I really dig. I covered Jump Back Jake a little over a week ago, but now another great artists has made his way to my mail box. I’m hoping I see more independent acts like this in the future.
Derek Jordan’s self financed release Identity reaches back to the basics in a traditional classic rock sort of way. Everything I’ve ever said about rock needing to evolve can be thrown out the window. It’s nice to hear artists that want to make music and not just make records and live the life of a rock star. Derek calls his style Psych Alternative Rock and I think he pins it down with that one. The inspiring lyrics mixed with some swaggering rock riffs and Derek’s deep, powerful and warm voice make every bit of his album very comforting on the ears. Is this rock music that you’ll listen to while throwing a kegger in your frat house? No. Is it music you will enjoy listening to while driving, working, reading a book etc.? Yes. Don’t get me wrong, it’s fun but it’s just not “party” music. It’s much more than that. Identity is a journey through a mind of intelligence and honesty.

I love the album. Derek Jordan’s songs have so much meaning to them. It’s refreshing to have an artist put his heart into his music.
