Diablo Cody to Produce ‘Breathers: A Zombie’s Lament’

If you’ve recovered from watching Jennifer’s Body, then get ready to see what Diablo Cody is dishing up 100105A1_CODY_D_B-GR_07-1next. She’s set to produce a new horror-comedy based on a novel by S.G. Browne called Breathers: A Zombie’s Lament. You can purchase the book right here if you want to get a head start on things. The script for the film is being written by Geoff LaTulippe who is currently working on a Drew Barrymore comedy.

Breathers is a dark comedy about zombies through the eyes of an ordinary reanimated corpse. A newly turned zombie has trouble adjusting to his new existence but finds solace in an Undead Anonymous meeting. The book was picked up by FOX Searchlight one week before it hit the shelves.

“We have a script and I am thrilled with it and hope we can go into production with it soon,” Cody told IF magazine. “It’s a zombie love story. Zombies are so hot now, but I like to think it’s about the personal side of being a zombie and being ostracized.”

Diablo Cody is also working on a Sweet Valley High adaptation. “I just started writing it,” Cody explains. “I’m very excited about that. It’s classic ‘80s series of books about these twins Elizabeth and Jessica and it’s going to be set in the ‘80s and true to the source material.”

Thoughts on either of these projects?

Funny enough, I just bought this book two hours ago at Borders with no inkling of an idea that it was being made into a film. I’ve read the first two chapters & it’s quite amusing. Will be funny, like B-Sol said, if Cody only produces and doesn’t actually do the screenplay – that would be a major “yikes” for me.

Just to clear up something: if you go and read the original article, you will notice that the quote starting with, “I just started writing it…” is actually transposed incorrectly. In the IF magazine article, it’s clear that they’ve moved on from the topic of BREATHERS and that quote is Cody is talking about adapting SWEET VALLEY HIGH. So it’s more that the author just couldn’t understand her poor cut-and-paste job than Cody combining zombies and teenagers.

I’m pretty excited about this project, and I too am not a Diablo Cody fan. At least not a fan of her writing. But since she’s only producing, hopefully we won’t have any zombies spouting off impossibly cute and hip dialogue for 90 minutes. And Bobby, I remember that episode clear as day–Tempest Bledsoe was the star, I do believe!

I’m sorry, but I really hate this woman. She angers me. I didn’t think Juno or Jennifer’s Body were any good. I love how Geoff LaTulippe is writing the script to the movie, with Cody only attached to produce the movie, yet Cody says, “I just started writing it”… sounds like a certain someone wants to get credit for it if it hits big… apparently she thinks having your name attached to the movie only as a producer isn’t worth much.

and another thing, I remember something like this happening on an episode of “Monsters”… not exactly the same but a zombie did fall in love with a living girl… i guess since it’s 2 zombies falling in love it’s a fresh idea, but who really wants to see two dead people bumping uglies?
