Dexter recap: Season 3, episode 10

Dexter, Season 3, episode 10

“Go Your Own Way”

Air date: November 30, 2008 on Showtime

Dexter and Rita are out to dinner at a nice restaurant with Syl and Miguel. The Prados tell Dex and Rita they have a surprise: They’ve gotten the chef to cater the wedding. While outwardly acting chummy with Miguel, Dex thinks about how to get rid of him.

On the drive home, Dex broods over Miguel and Rita assumes he’s upset because he’s learned that Miguel is cheating. She thinks Miguel’s having an affair with Maria. They pick up Astor at Deb’s, where they meet Anton for the first time. Dex asks if Anton be Deb’s plus one to the wedding. Awkward.

The next morning, Deb oversleeps and freaks out because Anton’s protective detail will know he stayed over with her.

At work, Dex looks for leverage against Miguel. He finds some in Toby Edwards, who Maria says is a suspect in the Ellen Wolf case because he called her house three times night of her murder. Dex thinks he might be a witness, i.e. leverage.

Vince is in charge of Dex’s bachelor party. He says he needs to make the audience vomit and have an erection at the same time. Angel urges him to scale it back, since they’re all so busy with the skinner and Wolf cases.

Quinn asks Deb about Anton sleeping over. Tells her it’s her shield, she should watch it.

Angel takes an urgent phone call, then asks Quinn to cover for him and races off on some errand.

Dex is playing computer games on Miguel’s computer. He tells Miguel the Ellen Wolf case is breaking. Some guy who was outside her place about the time she was getting strangled.

Miguel says they’re partners. Dex says he doesn’t want a partner. After the wedding, they’ll go their own ways.

Angel arrives at the hospital, where undercover vice detective/girlfriend Barbara is recovering from a beating a john gave her. She thinks he left blood spatters on her keys. Angel takes them, gives most of the set to the cop guarding her door (Jeff Lindsay) and pockets one which he brings to Dexter to test.

Maria’s questioning the bartender from her and Ellen’s night out, who’s her prime suspect. Ellen tipped him high, so Maria thinks he came to her house looking for sex, killed her, then called her twice to make it look like he thought she was alive.

Miguel and Dex watch on video while Maria gets him to admit he was there. But he says she never answered the door, so he went home.

Quinn calls Maria out of the interview room. Tells her he’s not the guy. He was closing out the bar, on video, when Ellen was killed.

Maria returns to her suspect, interviews him as though he’s a witness, and finds that he saw an SUV, dark blue, with big halogens, heading the other way on Ellen’s street when he arrived.

Syl helps Rita try on wedding dresses. Syl reminisces about her wedding day, then says things are still bad between her and Miguel.

Maria bursts into Dex’s office and chews him out about not putting a case number on the key – she’s all stressed out, which means she’s ripe for Miguel to manipulate, removing Dex’s leverage.

Vince is cursing into his phone, angry that his bachelor party plans have fallen through. Quinn gives him a tip on a full service party boat. Then Anton shows up looking for Deb. She’s not there, but he and Quinn talk. Quinn apologizes for keeping him off the books. Anton says Deb told him it was a clerical error. Anton punches Quinn and gets thrown out. Deb races after Anton, who yells at her for protecting him from the truth. He threatens to sue the department, then blows up at her, asking if she’s with him because she feels guilty about what happened to him. He says she needs to seriously think about their relationship.

Migeul is at Maria’s, well into a bottle of wine. They talk about grief. Maria lets slip that they’re checking every surveillance camera from Ellen’s to the cemetery where they found her body. Miguel, acting all sensitive, reminisces about when they were together. He gives her a friendly kiss, which then turns deeper. A knock on the door. It’s Dexter, apologizing for the key mishap. He confesses it was for a colleague in a different department and apologizes for interrupting – winking at Miguel as he does so.

Rita tells Dex she told Syl about Miguel and Maria. Syl shows up at Maria’s and screams at Miguel. She says they’re done, yells at him about being out all night last Thursday, then tears off. Maria says there’s no way he was there Thursday. Miguel tears off saying he’ll straighten it out. Maria’s nearly blinded by the big halogen lights on his dark SUV.

Miguel shows up at the donut place where Dex gets his usual. He says it was kind of a bitch move to send Syl to Maria’s last night. Dex says it wasn’t him. Then Miguel says his office is doing an ethics probe on Deb.

Dex goes to Miguel’s house, cons his way inside by telling the housekeeper he needs to look in the den to get ideas for a best man’s gift, then goes searching for Ellen’s wedding ring, which Miguel took as a trophy. He finds it in a cigar humidor and takes it, leaving a drycleaners slip in its place.

Tammy, the bachelor party planner, shows up at Vince’s lab and helps him plan the party, flirting all the while.

Angel gets the key test results back from Dexter. Dex warns him not to walk through a door he can’t shut afterward.

Miguel packs. Syl gets back early and tells him he needs to clear out and not come back. He notices his humidor is cracked and finds the cleaners slip. He picks up the shirt, and the clerk tells him the blood stain on it won’t come out.

Angel heads out to assault the guy whose DNA was on the key. Dexter’s voice is in his head when he decides not to.

Dex asks Deb about Anton. She has really mixed feelings about him. As she leaves, Dexter spies Miguel stomping through the office. They meet on the roof. Miguel’s ready to fight. Physically. Miguel threatens to tell Rita all about him. Dex uses the ring as leverage. “You’ve got the ring. I’ve got City Hall,” he threatens. Dex realizes there’s no point to leverage with Miguel. He’ll always do whatever he wants.

Plot twist: Miguel takes a call from with George King, who was observing them through binoculars. Miguel has told King Dex knows where Freebo is, setting Dex up for a skinning. Meanwhile, Dex resolves to take Miguel down however he can.

As Dex arrives at home, someone throws a sack over his head, shoves him in the trunk of a car, and speeds off.

Damnit I have such a hard time watching this show, keeping me so far off the edge of my seat. Well written, never thought I would feel so horrible for a serial killer.
