Dexter: Early Cuts animated shorts coming soon

How cool is this? In a few weeks, Showtime will start airing short animated webisodes that give Dexter fanatics more of the backstory behind Dexter Morgan’s development into the serial killer next door.

We got a preview of the concept at Comic Con, but this week Showtime revealed the air date and shared photos from the 12-part online series, called Dexter: Early Cuts (get it?).

The weekly webisodes premiere Sunday, Oct. 25, on Showtime’s Web site. Each episode will unfold in four 1 or 2 minute chapters. Dexter star Michael C. Hall will do the voiceovers, just as he does on the TV series.

Early Cuts will reveal how Dexter’s killing techniques evolved into the calculated, methodical approach he uses on the show. His victims will include an arsonist, a corrupt Gulf War veteran and a woman who is a “black widow.” Fans will also get to see Dex buy his boat, the Slice of Life, and find out when he started keeping slides of his victims’ blood as souvenirs.

Showtime recruited a different illustrator for each webisode. The series kicks off with noted artist Kyle Baker.
