Anyone who's watched Phil at all on the show knows that he's a smoking timebomb. He's a substance (nicotine) addict, he's killing himself one drag at a time. Let Darwin take it from here. His 15 minutes of fame is pretty much over anyway. He was fun to watch. The only victims here are his family - kids, grandkids, etc - if he cared about them enough he would have not been smoking and instead given them more time with him. So be it.

FYI It is called DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) not fibrosis. The DVT can travel to the lung and cause a pulmonary embolism, that is what Capt Phil suffered. He is very fortunate he survived.

The dude needs to quit smoking. He smokes like a chimney. One more Pulmonary embolism he will not likely survive, he doesn't have the lung capacity. The smoking will eventually get him anyway. Furthermore, on the show when they thought he fractured a rib, you do not want to use a splint around the ribcage. It may offer some pain relief, but it can reduce the ability to completely expand the chest cavity when breathing and lead to pneumonia. Pain control is the only treatment for rib fractures so the patient can deep breath and cough more comfortably, thus reducing the likelyhood of developing pneumonia.

It is called Dvt Deep vain fibrosis. Caused from sitting for long periods of time and the blood doesn't circulate in your legs witch causes a blood clot, that eventually frees up and moves to the legs or heart with no warning. Phil is lucky he survived. Most cases aren't caught in time. Like my father.
