Creepy Critic: 'Zombieland' Review

It’s a double feature for me this evening and Zombieland started things off right! A perfect balance of zombieland_1shtmany dualities; horror/comedy, hero/sidekick, monster/human, romance/action–Zombieland offers a little something for everyone.

Woody Harrrelson and Jesse Eisenberg are the perfect odd couple as Tallahassee and Columbus, who meet during their travels post apocalypse and tag team zombies across America. Tallahassee “goes hulk” on every zombie he comes across, but underneath his outrageous behavior he’s hurting as much as Columbus–his anxious and phobic counterpart. Still, hilarity ensues as kill after kill, our dynamic duo kick some serious ass and make us laugh like hell along the way. Enter Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin) as the sinister sisterly team who have a less than stellar history when it comes to ensnaring men for their own benefit. And Little Rock is only 12! After a few devious run-ins with the boys, our four leads finally manage to get along and decide to travel to a reputedly zombie-free amusement park, “Pacific Playland.” Along the way, each one learns something from the other and they manage to break some rules to have fun.

Director Ruben Fleischer and company have made a cleverly executed horror comedy that is brilliant from start to finish. Fleischer didn’t rely on the zombies to carry the film but they bring the perfect amount of gross-out gore to the table. In the midst of all the mayhem and merriment a surprise guest star adds something extra special to the mix. Comparisons to Shaun of the Dead will be inevitable, but while SOTD skillfully danced the line between horror and comedy, Zombieland comes out with guns blazing and doesn’t pretend to be anything more. What else would you expect from a film that has Metallica’s For Whom the Bell Tolls as the opening song? And besides, is it such a horrible thing to be compared to Shaun of the DeadZombieland is a great addition to the zom-com hall of fame, but it’s a damn fine movie period. Now, pass me a Twinkie.

While I really did love every aspect of the movie, I think the ‘celebrity guest star’ (so difficult to not say the name!) had the best stretch of the movie. Maybe it’s from what they did with said star’s role but I just couldn’t stop laughing.

This was really a refreshing horror / action / comedy to have come out as it was generally well written, funny, and graphic. While SOTD is a favorite for everyone- Zombieland breaks the mold. Good review! ;)
