Everyone knows by now, I hope, that former NBC sitcom staple Scrubs is taking up residence at a new network for its eighth and rumored final season. When the show returns, it will air on ABC.
E! had the opportunity to speak with Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence last week, and he revealed several things that fans of the series might find interesting. The scoop includes:
Although the series’ eighth season is reported to be the last one ever, showrunners have mapped it out in such a way that ABC president Stephen McPherson could prolong the show for another season if he feels like it. Why he would want to let Scrubs age ungracefully, though, is beyond me, unless it’s just a money thing.
Lawrence confirms that even if the show should go on unnecessarily, he and star Zach Braff will not be returning.
In the event that the show does continue past Season Eight, Lawrence supposes it will be “a completely different show with different castmembers [sic].” Speaking of which, the entire original cast is lined up for the eighth season. (Excellent!)
Showrunners have hired a lot of new talent to play young interns on the show, and they might even decide to rehash older scripts, although Lawrence words it slightly differently: “[W]e can essentially do some of the same stories we did the first two years, but with the old students acting as the teachers.”
Also, since the original main characters are now older and presumably wiser — the last of which is debatable, of course — the series aims to rid itself of “the old dynamic of our main castmembers [sic] learning lessons.”
And if anyone is wondering whether J.D. and Elliot will finally hook up permanently, that is possible, but if so, it will allegedly happen when fans aren’t anticipating it. I’d like to see them get a development like that past eagle-eyed viewers who’ve been waiting forever for it to happen, though.
