Blood Lamp is Not Just for Vampires

Designer Mike Thompson is urging people to consider the amount of energy they are consuming by creating a blood lamp. This unique creation is a single-use lantern that draws its energy from a drop of blood. To use the lamp, you break off the top, dissolve a tablet inside and bleeeeeed. The lamp’s ephemeral nature forces users to consider how to use energy more wisely. Or does it make you sick? I think it’s pretty nifty.

I’m guessing the liquid inside these lamps is luminol–a chemical used by forensic investigators to detect blood at crime scenes. It reacts with iron. Any other guesses?

You can check out a picture of the lamp in action here. Oh, and props to Switched for finding the video below. It made my morning.

You know.. there’s a movie called Blood Car about a car that run’s off of blood in a similar concept.

Soon late night readers across the world will result to murdering the innocent (or guilty) to power their reading lamps. What have we come to?!
