The Arctic Monkeys are one of my favourite bands, and not just currently either, probably of all time.
They’d at least be in my top 10, which for a relatively new band less than five years formed, and with just two full studio albums to their name is quite an astounding achievement.
Last week, I told you about how the band had assumed a moniker under which to release a limited edition vinyl single. This week, they released their proper new single under their real name, and boy, is it a corker.
Teddy Picker is off their second album Favourite Worst Nightmare, and is one of the best tracks on the album in my opinion.
It has an incredibly fast pace to it, dragging you in to the meat of the song and beyond, making it one of those rare indie songs which you are as happy to dance to as you are singing along at home, or in the shower.
The whole song is based around a bassline and drum rhythm which completely dominates, with only Alex Turner’s instantly recognisable voice cutting through it.
The video meanwhile is a simple enough affair, with director Roman Coppola just spending a day with the band, and recording the outcome.
So we get to see them in the studio, and then walking to the pub for a few drinks afterwards.
I’m lucky enough to have tickets to go and see the Arctics live on tour in Manchester next week, and this will be one of the many songs which I’ll be singing back to the band as they perform it.
The only question I have for you is: Are the Arctic Monkeys actually capable of not writing an instant classic?
Good question Dave. In all honesty, I’d like them a lot better if there weren’t so many lame copycat acts out there right now.
Lyrically, they’re light years ahead of other bands. I’m still loving “You used to get it in your fishnets…” Got to be the funniest/saddest lyric of the entire year.
