So, friends of mine already know that when I get really geeked about something, I call it awesome. This is partly due to my being a child of the ’80s and partly because despite being a professional wordsmith, I sometimes reach for the easiest adjective at hand — especially when I am overly charmed, excited or enthused.
All that build-up is so that you understand when I say this new animated clip from This American Life is “awesome,” it means I was indeed charmed by it and wanted to share with you.
Chris Ware and John Kuramoto created the animated scenes, featured in TAL’s second season. I love it not just for the blob people, who look just like the family in the mural at my childhood library, but because the anecdote is so great. It’s about a couple who remember an experience very differently. Watch and see if it resonates with you:
It did for me, because I had the same experience with my twin sister. Give us a lie detector test and ask who dropped a glass jug of orange juice on the kitchen floor when we were 8 and we’d both pass. She swears she remembers the glass shards landing near her bare feet, while I stand firm by the smell and stickiness of the juice when I mopped it up — I must have been the guilty party.
What about you? Have any co-opted memories in your past? If so, share ‘em in the comments.
