Last Sunday night my sister and I went to the local video store to rent a nice girlie flick to watch together. We even kicked out my husband so it would be a very girlie evening. We rented a movie which we thought was going to be like “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” but the Asian version, but were quite surprised!
“Saving Face” by Alice Wu starring Michelle Krusiec and Lynn Chen has all the classic romance element: marriage, love, pressure from family, traditions, pregnant single woman, and rebellion…Only the pregnant single woman is a 48 year old widower and her daughter (the daughter she’s always trying to set up for dates with men) is a sexy lesbian! I felt bad about kicking my husband out because most guys would appreciate this film for obvious reasons! ;)
I won’t say too much more because I wouldn’t want to spoil the movie, but this film is truly surprising! I can usually guess where a plot is going in movies, but not in this one AT all!
One more fun snippet: it contains a very sexy lesbian love scene and also has the conservative Chinese speaking mother renting a porno….hehe
You HAVE to see this one!
SAVING FACE is a romantic comedy about a daughter struggling to understand her mother’s heart, which ultimately allows her to understand her own. It is the story of unspoken loves, contemporary and cultural taboos, and the journey of two women towards living their lives honestly. via Sony Classics

i became interested in this film when I recently saw the Asia Awards which was really interested and a very exciting show. I enjoyed this movie on many levels. I was very impressed that this was the director’s first time out. Also, this movie was produced by Will Smith. I am planning on purchasing this movie along with another titleed, “A Bridge to the Sun”, I enjoy good movies and good asian movies as well. If you have any suggestions on other good asian movies please let me know. “Memoirs of a Geisha” wore me out and was anothe dog a asian woman out movie. “Saving Face”, was an uplift.
