13 Scary Halloween Movies

If you’re like me and are too old to go trick or treating, why not celebrate Halloween with a fearful filmfest!  Here are some suggestions for movies to rent tonight!

The Addams Family

The Addams Family (1991)
It’s starts out at Christmas time and end up the following Halloween. It may not be a true Halloween film but how much more spooky could this family be? It’s always Halloween in the Addams household!
Starring: Anjelica Huston, Raul Julia

Alien

Alien (1979)
Horrifying, riveting tale of alien invading space ship was enormously popular. Critics agree this slime-fest is one of most effective sci-fi/horror films ever. Compulsory viewing for suspense, horror, terror fans.
Starring: Tom Skerritt, Sigourney Weaver

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Classic thriller about a serial killer invading the dreams of a group of teens. It was considered extremely scary when first released and it can still hold it’s own all these years later. Great modern classic!
Stars: John Saxon, Ronee Blakley, Heather Langenkamp, Robert Englund

Beetlejuice

Beetlejuice (1988)
Giddy, outlandish, high-spirited comic fantasy about two pesky poltergeists trying to frighten away the new owners of their old house. Not a Halloween themed film, but if it doesn’t put you in the mood to haunt, nothing will!! Michael Keaton shines as Beetlejuice!
Starring: Michael Keaton, Alec Baldwin

Candyman (Special Edition)

Candyman (1992)
Chilling of urban legend killer with a big grudge and the PhD student who’s framed for murders he commits. This film, like all of Barkers, has it’s gory moments. Not for the squeamish.

The Evil Dead

Evil Dead (1982)
Ultra gory thriller that seats five young campers against body-possessing demons after chanting from "The Book Of The Dead". This Sam Rami classic started a whole wave of demon possession movies. Definitely a modern classic!!
Stars: Bruce Campbell, Ellen Sandweiss

The Frighteners (Director's Cut)

The Frighteners (1996)
Horror/comedy about spirits aiding psychic’s ghostbusting scam. Stories within stories, outstanding special effects and a wonderful cast make this a keeper. Fans of Jeffery Combs will love his role in this!

Fright Night

Fright Night (1985)
Modern classic vampire movie about a teen who thinks his handsome new neighbor is a vampire. Totally entertaining and the sequel is equally good.
Starring: Chris Sarandon, William Ragsdale

Halloween

Halloween (1978)
This film started the slasher genre rolling. A masked murderer is stalking the teenagers of Hadenfield on Halloween, trying to finish something he started many years before. A huge smash, even the critics loved it and it still holds up today as one of the best suspenseful, well done horror flicks of our time.
Starring: Donald Pleasence, Jamie Lee Curtis

Hellraiser

Hellraiser (1987)
Extra gory, brutal, bloody frightfest about woman’s affair with her demonic brother-in-law. You may gag a few times, but this is definitely worth watching at least once!

Hocus Pocus

Hocus Pocus (1993)
Every time we watch it, we all want to move to Salem, Mass. It’s cute, it’s funny, the effects are great. Great special effects, cute story! Three sisters who happen to be witches return to Salem after 300 years to wreck havoc on the town that hanged them.
Stars: Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy

The Nightmare Before Christmas

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
Tim Burton’s innovative stop-motion animated musical about Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King, who becomes enthralled by Christmas. He’s the head of Halloweentown, so this causes some problems. Some stunning visuals. Young and old will love this and you won’t be able to stop singing the songs for days!

Poltergeist

Poltergeist (1982)
Very creepy, entertaining and suspenseful film about a little girl wanted by the poltergeists in her house. Always a thrill to watch, even if you’ve seen it a hundred times.
