2010 Predictions for Linux

2010 Predictions for Linux

I’ve read at least two articles about predictions for Linux and free and open source software in 2010. Some of them predictions might be a bunch of things that have been brewing because of some changes in the open source community and how certain businesses and/or foundations have stepped in.

An example is MySQL. Bruce Byfield thinks that communities behind distros will stop shipping MySQL and turn to other MySQL forks like MariaDB because of the distrust towards… More »

Being A Professional College Athlete

Being A Professional College Athlete

I’ve had some interesting discussions regarding what it means to be a college athlete these days. If you’re not aware, a college athlete gets a scholarship to attend college and play a sport in exchange.

Part of the agreement is that they cannot accept gifts or any other compensation from anyone during their college career.

I get frustrated when college athletes leave school early to pursue a professional career in the NFL, NBA or MLB. I get frustrated because I think they’re… More »

Kentucky Derby Dreams: Top 10 (Dec 31st)

The end of the year has arrived, and this is my final Derby Top 10 of 2009. All Derby hopefuls turn three on January 1st, and as we inch closer to the first Saturday in May, a new player has arrived on the scene. Please click on the name of each horse to view their Horse Racing Nation profile page, which includes news, pedigree, results, and video.

The aforementioned new player is Take Control. The $1.9 million Baffert runner debuted in a flat… More »

I was using Windows. I didn’t know about Linux and it wasn’t quite known in my university. But things changed 2 years after that. The university started making sure that most of the colleges and departments had free and open source software running. That was an interesting beginning because, of course, the changes meant that it was enforced in practically all the labs at the university. Back then students only had microfloppy disks and not… More »

Having Help via BeginLinux

Having Help via BeginLinux

Not knowing where to begin, you might as well look for possible venues of help. One example could be BeginLinux.com. It has a community blog where you could read different kinds of tips for desktop Linux usage as well as Linux administration. If you are mainly wondering about Linux desktop news and information on Linux distro releases, then head on to their blog which is hosted on WordPress.com, called Begin Linux Blog, of course. That blog… More »

It’s almost 2010 and I find myself looking back at what Jeanne and I have written here at Gaming and I’ve put together a list of my favorites – one from her and one from me for each month.

The list starts in December and heads back in time to January.

Read over the list and if you have the time, check out the links. There’s some good stuff in there.

Young Male Hunters, Higher Risk of Injury

Young Male Hunters, Higher Risk of Injury

Young men, between the ages of 15 and 34 years, are more likely to be injured while hunting than women or older hunters, particularly when using trees stands, say researchers. While something like this may not be a big surprise to some people, it is a serious issue. Young men (and women) who are severely injured in their early adult years can be seriously affected for the rest of their lives in terms of lost income, cost on the health… More »

Let’s Pay a Visit to the Dollhouse

Let's Pay a Visit to the Dollhouse

Dollhouse returns next week and they have some big surprises and great guests up their sleeve as they head for, what I’m sure will be, a boffo ending to the series.

Here are a couple of promo photos to get you in the mood.

Bennett (guest star Summer Glau, L) is brought in to help Topher (Fran Kranz, R) restore Echo’s original personality and memories in the DOLLHOUSE episode “Getting Closer” airing Friday, Jan. 8 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. ©2009 Fox… More »

2009-2010 Sugar Bowl Preview

2009-2010 Sugar Bowl Preview

This isn’t the season that Florida wanted.

This isn’t the season Cincinnati expected.

Yet here we are, on New Year’s Eve, the night before Florida and Cincinnati meet one another on the fifty-yard line in the Sugar Bowl.

It’s easy to say that Florida will win this game, but I wouldn’t be so sure of that. The Bearcats deserve to be in this game as much – maybe more – than the Gators. It’s been an uphill battle from the start for them,… More »

New Fringe Photos are Unearthed!

New Fringe Photos are Unearthed!

Doctor, doctor, will I be able to play the violin after the surgery?

Of course you will, it’s a knee replacement!

That’s funny, because I couldn’t play it before!

(insert rim shot)

Fringe returns on January 11 and we’ve Unearthed the photos from the episode called — “Unearthed.” The case begins when a young girl miraculaously awakens from a coma with all the abilities of a Russian soldier!

Sounds like someone was involved in “Remote Viewing” training.

Let’s get the second half of the season started!

Best Hockey Fights of The Decade

Best Hockey Fights of The Decade

The decade is coming to an end in just a few hours and I thought it would be great to look back at some of the best hockey fights of the past 10 years.  Puck Daddy put up his list of favorites a few days ago and I’m sure you will have yours as well.  I’d love to hear which scrap you think has been the best (and why) from this past decade.

I’m sure you know that I’m a Calgary… More »

Top Ten Thursdays: MMOs I Played In 2009

Top Ten Thursdays: MMOs I Played In 2009

Top Ten Thursdays is back, and this time around MMOtaku features 10 massively multiplayer online games that I have laid my grubby hands on this past year. Note that 10 isn’t really the number of MMOs I played in 2009. Actually, I’ve played more MMOs than I really should. Ahh, but that’s fodder for another posting.

Without further ado (since this article is long overdue), I present you, dear MMOtaku viewer, the 10 MMOs I played—and still play—in 2009:

Pixisnap Your Own Personalized Photomosaic

Pixisnap Your Own Personalized Photomosaic

After I was married, there was an item that I owned as a bachelor that didn’t make it into the house and back on the wall where it was in my own apartment. It was one of those photomosaic posters of Yoda that was nicely framed. I don’t see that artwork making it back into the house in the near future, but I might be able to create my own photomosaic with Pixisnap and set it as… More »

It’s X-Files Marks the Spot in an Upcoming Bones

It's X-Files Marks the Spot in an Upcoming Bones

X-Files star Dean Haglund guests on an upcoming Bones episodes called “The X in the File.” Guess they’re not going to miss a single opportunity to pay tribute to the old series as Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and Booth’s (David Boreanaz) investigation of a death in the desert near Roswell, NM.

Haglund plays Blaine Miller, the owner of a diner who might have a clue to the mystery.

The episode was scheduled to air January 14, but Fox looks like they’re still doing… More »

Is Your Email at Risk Online

Is Your Email at Risk Online

I just received an automated email from a web service that was warning me about just tweeting my email address in a recent tweet to a friend. I knew it was something I didn’t really want to do, but I wasn’t sure of a way to really share my email address via twitter without opening it up to be harvested by potential spammers.

The Emails @ Risk website provides an option to save your email address as an image that you… More »
