Hollywood Park race recap (May 30-31); Smooth Air in Ohio Derby romp

Hollywood Park Friday night (5-30-08)

Race 1: Sir Chimi broke a bit slow from the rail and was used more than expected to get the lead. He weakened (4th) in the lane from his early efforts and could go better stalking with a better post next out. Canani dropper Celtic Sword was along in time. Bewitching Bartok had the right post/trip, but he could only manage 3rd for a good layoff barn…still hasn’t won since July ’06.

Race 2: Look Deep… More »

More Mario videos: Peach is a cheat?

More Mario videos: Peach is a cheat?

I’m really amazed at the amount of fan-made videos on one of video gamedom’s most loved characters. Yes, I’m talking about Mario (“It’s always about Mario,” quipped Luigi in the last video we featured), and this time around, it seems our jumper-clad plumber is the victim.

As you have already probably guessed, the video is about Princess Peach and her alleged illicit affair with … hmmm, let’s just watch the video, shall we?

Haha! Damn you, Luigi! Before you condemn Mario’s brother,… More »

Devils Sign Finnish Player Anssi Selmela

Devils Sign Finnish Player Anssi Selmela

The New Jersey Devils have offered Finnish defenceman Anssi Salmela a deal.  While the details are not yet known, it does sound like a good deal since the 23-year-old free-agent had 16 goals and 16 assists in 56 games with Tappara of the Finnish League last season. Salmela could sound familiar if you watched the 2004 World Junior Hockey tournament and this year’s world championship event.  I have to admit that I don’t know much about him but I… More »

Jeremy Shockey Injury Update – Fantasy Football Impact

Jeremy Shockey Injury Update - Fantasy Football Impact

Jeremy Shockey broke his left leg last year during the regular season. As you might have heard, the New York Giants wound up winning the Super Bowl without Shockey’s services.

At first, many expected Shockey to be traded. The Giants showed they could win without him and Shockey’s outlandish personality seemed like a bad fit. However, in recent weeks, it appears more and more likely that Shockey will remain with the Giants.

According to reports, Shockey’s rehab… More »

Using Twitter to Search and Sift

Using Twitter to Search and Sift

It’s such a simple service, but the usefulness of Twitter confounds many observers and participants. It’s easy to mock Twitter for the trivial content that gets posted by different people. When I have time at home, I tend to put Twitter in a small Window, (using Twhirl), and it checks for new updates every 3-4 minutes. The background noise is fairly easy to ignore, and it’s easy to stop following anyone who you find has nothing worthwhile to say. Some… More »

Oh Chad,What Are You Thinking?

Oh Chad,What Are You Thinking?

Haven’t really thought about Chad Johnson in a while. Been busy watching the NBA playoffs and waiting, WAITING, for college football to come back to us. Thought to check up on him and see how things were going. Headline in The Cincinnati Enquirer:  CHAD OWES $13K IN TAXES. Not Wesley Snipes type numbers so that’s something to be happy about if your Chad Johnson. He owes this money for his Walnut Hills home. And the Enquirer is… More »

Florida Panthers Sign Michael Frolick

Florida Panthers Sign Michael Frolick

This is great for the Florida Panthers.  It’s being reported that they have signed 20-year-old, Michael Frolick, who is considered one of their top prospects.  He was a first-round draft pick back (10th overall) in 2006 and has had 24 goals and 65 points in 45 games this past season with Rimouski of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.  He has also represented the Czech Republic at the World Junior Championships in 2006 and 2007. ”I think it’s great… More »

Manu Ginobili to Play in Olympics for Argentina

Manu Ginobili to Play in Olympics for Argentina

Despite being slowed in the playoffs due to an ankle injury, Manu Ginobili should be ready to go for the Olympics this summer. Ginobili will again lead Argentina as that South American country goes for its second consecutive gold medal.

Ginobili’s play suffered more and more as the playoffs went along. Against the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference Finals, Ginobili become a non-factor outside of his Game 3 30-point explosion.

Although the San Antonio Spurs will… More »

New Paradigm: Social PR

New Paradigm: Social PR

Geoff Livingston sums up the need for companies to abandon their old command and control methods of marketing and message management. “The way we react to social media’s impact is by moving away from message control, and getting back to creating value for the community served by the newspaper (or TV stations, or …).” He calls the new approach (which is actually just a variation on what companies have been doing for a long time) Social PR. You can… More »

Wings Better Than Pistons on TV in Detroit

Wings Better Than Pistons on TV in Detroit

WOW!!  How exciting.  Despite the fact that the Detroit Pistons are in the NBA Playoffs, it was the hockey action that viewers in Motown were interested in.  Even more amazing – it marked the  best overnight rating for a third game of the Stanley Cup finals in six years.  Unfortunately, for those dedicated Wings fans, the Pittsburgh Penguins were victorious over the Detroit Red Wings. Here are some quick facts about the ratings: Game 3 garnered a 2.8… More »

Hollywood Park analysis (Sunday, June 1, 2008)

HOL 1 (Alw-61k, 4up, 8.5T) Number 2 Tybalt (7-5) looked good winning his flat mile US bow for Frankel, and he should stalk and pounce his way to another tally versus a less than stellar cast. Number 4 Heroi Do Bafra (8-5) has run well without winning in eight US starts for Frankel, and he looks 2nd best… More »

Southwest Airlines – The No Fees Brand

Southwest Airlines - The No Fees Brand

In a market flooding with extra fees, Southwest Airlines is striking back with a no fees message.  Whether the cause is rising fuel costs or airlines trying to line their pockets, no one knows for sure, but consumers are feeling the crunch from the myriad of extra fees and reduced services that airlines are embracing.

Here are a few changes being made by airlines in recent months that hurt consumers:

First bag fees (that’s in addition to fees for bags after the… More »
